Dallas hopefully put an end to a mixed stretch of games last night, beating the Nuggets 109 – 93. This win was especially key, as it gave the Mavs the playoff-seeding tiebreaker with the Nuggets (in the event both teams finish with the same record). I recommend Mike Fisher’s analysis at DallasBasketball.com.

Mavs beat Nuggets; reclaim mojo
March 30th, 2010The Mavs have guts – we can roll with this
March 24th, 2010The Mavs beat the Clippers last night. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be “news”, but last night’s win involved a 4th quarter comeback led by Jason Kidd, after Dirk was ejected following some “I really miss you guys” pushing and shoving with Drew Gooden.
The important part is the Mavs channeled their frustration at struggling to beat the Clippers, playing well late after a mediocre start: icing the game in the 4th quarter instead of letting it get close.
Mavs fans familiar with 4th quarter drama over the past few years should take heart: these Mavs have guts.
Go Mavs! Go Cats!
March 12th, 2010Brandford Doolittle threw it out there in an article today: is this the best Mavs team ever?
Sweet! As a Mavs fan, just having this conversation is awesome.
And if you’re a Northwestern Wildcats fan, you’re psyched that the ‘Cats made it to the 2nd day of the Big Ten tournament. NU Sports being what they are, this is to some extent sad this is remarkable, but it’s still worth adulation. Go Cats! And follow today’s game vs. Purdue here.
Mavs beat Nets; win 13 straight
March 11th, 2010The Mavs won their 13th straight game last night, beating the Nets 96 – 87. (For those of you who haven’t watched ESPN at all the past week, this represents a tie for longest winning streak in the NBA this season).
This should come as much of a relief as a celebration, as the Nets are the worst team in the league. Losing last night would have been bad, bad news. But after falling behind early (39 points in 1st half), Kidd, Butler, Marion, Beaubois, and Haywood helped pick up the slack for an ice-cold Dirk.

What to expect from the Mavs in the 2010 Free-Agent Bonanza
March 4th, 2010The Summer of 2010 stands to be one of the most exciting and dynamic in recent NBA history. There’s a slew of talented free agents; several teams have talent + a TON of cap space; owners and players are talking smack and gearing up for a 2011-12 lockout; and if you’re a Mavs fan, you’ve got Cuban’s deal-making abilities waiting in the wings!
Beyond that high-level summary, what does the future hold for the Mavs? And what does the detailed picture look like for other teams?

PTI guys agree: Mavs bigger threat to Lakers than Nuggets
March 2nd, 2010On today’s PTI, Michael Wilbon and Dan LeBatard agreed the Mavs represent a ” . . . bigger threat to the Lakers” than the Nuggets. Their logic: the Mavs’ playmakers + Jason Kidd form better offensive core than Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, JR Smith, Nene, K-Mart, and Ty Lawson. (Who makes the second most of that bunch, btw? K-Mart with $15.4M. Wow).
Following the Mavs’ ten game win streak, I’m inclined to agree. The Mavs have momentum, and they’re playing great, including last night’s win over the Bobcats, despite getting into North Carolina around 5am the day of the game.
Meanwhile the Basketball Prospectus power rankings have the Nuggets and Jazz both atop the Mavs, although that’s through Sunday (not counting last night’s win), and – if I remember right – it’s a season-long calculation, which (purposefully) doesn’t give weight to the aforementioned ‘momentum’.
Bottom line: GO MAVS. With an “easy to middle-of-the-road” schedule coming up over the next two weeks (Timberwolves and Bulls x2, and Kings, Knicks, and Nets x1), the Mavs need to keep the momentum going, winning these winnable games to keep the pressure on the Nuggets, Jazz, Suns, Thunder, Spurs, and Trailblazers, each of whom is within 5 games in the wild, wild NBA West.
