Fall Game Recap #3

October 5th, 2010

It was another beautiful Monday night in September when Good Wood played Pants Party.  Yes that is their team name.  Both teams came in undefeated, however Pants Party had one their two games by forfeit.  Apparently there’s a team in our league that will forfeit a game to watch a 49ers Monday night football game.  Winner would take a one game lead on the loser for first place in the division.

One word describes Good Wood’s hitting during the  game: inconsistent.  There were some good at bats throughout the game, but Good Wood couldn’t seem to get the big hits when runners were in scoring position.  The batting order only went through two full times, which means that some players (Sherman, Kevin, Elias, and Alex) had only two at bats.  Not every player struggled, as was shown by Andrew and TC who both had good games batting.  TC hit a solo in the park home run in the last inning to give Good Wood some hope of a comeback.  In the end however the bats did not so up.

Defensively it was the same old solid play from Good Wood except for one really bad inning of pitching from yours truly.  Everyone show up defensively and made Pants Party really work for their runs.  Dick, Jason, Joe, TC, and Alex all made plays that save runs.  The game ended up coming down to poor pitching.  For most the game I was solid, in fact for most the game I was doing a good job pitching.  In one inning though I had trouble pitching strikes and walked a few batters.  On top of that a couple of pitches had no arc and were immediately crushed by the opposing batters.

In the end Pants Party defeated Good Wood 10-3 in what was actually a very close game for the most part.  The player of the game honors goes to TC whose home run was the offensive highlight of the night.

Fall Game Recap #2

October 5th, 2010

This is a very delayed recap, but it finally made it here.  That evening the Good Wood squad took the field at 9 pm against the Claim Runners.  It was the Claim Runners first played game of the season since their two previous games were cancelled due to lack of players.

In this game the Good Wood offense could be summed up by two innings.  The first inning saw the Good Wood guys hitting and running with strong enthusiasm.  The Claim Runners starting catcher struggled with base runners stealing and Good Wood took advantage by stealing every opportunity they got.  The Claim Runners made the appropriate adjustments and held Good Wood in check until late in the game when the Good Wood bats woke up again to spread their lead out of reach.  The hot hitters that evening were Sherman, Joe, and Jason who made several clutch hits and ran the bases with precision.

Defensively Good Wood showed the solid play that they are becoming known for.  Dick once again stood out as the top defender, but he was helped out by Jason, TC, and Joe making great catches in the outfield.  Joe and Dick both made diving catches that saved runs and frustrated the Claim Runners squad.

Good Wood had a solid performance overall and won 13-4.  The player of the game would have to go to Dick who stole some runs from the Claim Runners with his great play in the field.

Fall Game Recap #1

September 14th, 2010

The temp was in the 80s, the grass was freshly cut, and the dirt was freshly poured.  Well at least one of those things was true.  The new team on the block came in with all the optimism in the world.  In case you didn’t know the new team on the block is named Good Wood.  Try to keep up.

New Head Coach Sherman had studied the players and set the lineup accordingly.  Apparently he might know what he’s doing.  In his first game as Head Coach the Good Wood squad put fourteen runs on the board.  Six of those runs were spread out over the first few innings.  Then the Good Wood bats exploded for 8 runs spread out over 12 batters.  The big inning started with a single from Kevin and saw a homer from TC, clutch hitting from Andrew, and smart base running from Joe.  The lineup batted around and showed what the potential of this team could be.

Defensively Good Wood was in mid season form.  Jason and Dick anchored the team with smart decisions and solid glove work.  Most of the balls went to either left center or short stop, which by the way those two played was very good for the Good Wood.  Sherman made the only error in the game, as his one fielding opportunity saw him throw  wildly over to Elias at first.  Sorry coach but I had to say it.  Andrew and Anthony’s play behind the plate resulted in only one steal for the A.R. Lone Stars 1.  Alex looked pretty in right field, but unfortunately for him he didn’t see one ball hit his way.  TC and Joe did a great job backing Jason up in the outfield, and in fact TC made a catch on the only ball hit his way.  I must however note that Joe dropped the only ball hit his way.  It was an impressive drop considering that I didn’t think he could even get to the ball.  I didn’t mark that as an error because it was a very difficult catch to make.  I ended up pitching a solid game including three strike outs.  Two of the strike outs came on back to back batters.

The final score ended up being Good Wood 14 and A.R. Lone Stars 1 4.  The player of the week could go to TC for his solid defense and his big home run.  It could go to Dick for his great fielding and his two RBIs.  It could even go to me for a four run game and my three RBIs.  However, I’ve decided to give it to Jason who set the tone with his solid hitting at the lead off spot and his great fielding out in center field.  Good Wood’s next game is on the 20th at 9 PM against the 0-2 Claim Runners.

FALL SOFTBALL!

September 13th, 2010

Ah yes, the start of a new season.  So much hope and so much promise.  Hopefully we will start off more like the Houston Texans and less like the Dallas Cowboys.  This season brings a completely new start.  Only 7 guys from the Summer team are on the Fall roster.  Out of those 7 guys only 5 of them were on the Spring roster.  The team has also changed it’s name from the Rackballers to Good Wood.  Oh and I’m no longer the head coach.  I’m just the team’s GM.  Sherman has now taking over the coaching duties.

With change comes great optimism.  We have improved each season and should keep that trend going.  The team also gets a spark from new additions Joe, Elias, Alex, TC, and Coach Sherman’s personal favorite … Dick.

With all that in mind, let’s start the season off with a bang and bring the Good Wood.
