After two weeks in a row of being rained out, God finally decided that the Rackballers should play softball. It was a beautiful night for softball. The temp was in the high 50s, the sky was clear, and I didn’t hurt myself while stretching. Already I’m doing better than David Beckham. The Rackballers took on Prestoncrest Crush at 8 PM last night on field 7 at the Heritage Yards fields in Plano. The 15 man Rackballer roster was down 3 men do to spring break vacations. The always solid Gene and the up and comer Jonathan were somewhere in Mississippi (did I spell that right?) visiting family. Meanwhile, the team president was vacationing with his family in Maui. The rest of the 12 Rackballers showed up regardless of injury or illness. The Prestoncrest Crush had only 9 men show up for the game. Per league rules the Crush were able to play the Rackballers and not have to forfeit.
The Rackballers started off the game with some defensive problems. There were a few errors in the first inning including one from Brandon, Sherman, and Kevin. The Crush put 5 runs on the board in the first after the Rackballers went three up and three down in the top of the first. The second inning was more of the same for the Rackballers in the top of the inning, although David had a base hit but was caught trying to turn the single into a double. The bottom of the second inning showed that the Rackballers have some talent in the field as they only gave up 1 run. The momentum from the bottom of the second inning carried over to the top of the third as yours truly hit a line drive into left center field for a single. Unfortunately, the Rackballers were not able to capitalize despite a single from fellow Fantasy Champ Tim. The bottom of the third saw the Rackballers have their first serious injury of the year. Sherman twisted his knee while diving for a pop fly in short left center field. He limped off the field with a little help from Brandon. The rest of the players had to get moved around and had to try to refocus on the game. The Crush had already done some damage in that inning before the injury and ended up with 5 runs that inning. At the end of the third inning the Crush were leading the Rackballers 11-0. The top of the fourth saw Kevin and Geno hit singles, but still no runs scored for the Rackballers. The Rackballers came out in the bottom of the fourth determined to keep the Crush from scoring 4 more runs and to give themselves one more shot in the top of the 5th. With great resolve the Rackballers prevailed by only giving up two runs in the fourth and forcing a fifth inning. Jack led off the top of the fifth inning with a single, but just like the other 4 innings before it the Rackballers were not able to capitalize on the lead off single. I ended up being the last out of the game with a ground out to third base. The final score was Crush 13 Rackballers 0. As of 9:30 last night Sherman was still hurt but was hopeful that he would bounce back soon.
