On today’s PTI, Michael Wilbon and Dan LeBatard agreed the Mavs represent a ” . . . bigger threat to the Lakers” than the Nuggets. Their logic: the Mavs’ playmakers + Jason Kidd form better offensive core than Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, JR Smith, Nene, K-Mart, and Ty Lawson. (Who makes the second most of that bunch, btw? K-Mart with $15.4M. Wow).
Following the Mavs’ ten game win streak, I’m inclined to agree. The Mavs have momentum, and they’re playing great, including last night’s win over the Bobcats, despite getting into North Carolina around 5am the day of the game.
Meanwhile the Basketball Prospectus power rankings have the Nuggets and Jazz both atop the Mavs, although that’s through Sunday (not counting last night’s win), and – if I remember right – it’s a season-long calculation, which (purposefully) doesn’t give weight to the aforementioned ‘momentum’.
Bottom line: GO MAVS. With an “easy to middle-of-the-road” schedule coming up over the next two weeks (Timberwolves and Bulls x2, and Kings, Knicks, and Nets x1), the Mavs need to keep the momentum going, winning these winnable games to keep the pressure on the Nuggets, Jazz, Suns, Thunder, Spurs, and Trailblazers, each of whom is within 5 games in the wild, wild NBA West.
