Big 12 un-RIP?!?

June 14th, 2010

Apparently the Big 12 is alive, for now.

Other reporting suggests Texas decided that maintaining the rights to its own TV network was the deciding factor.

I’d give this another couple months to continue shaking out . . . I see the soon-to-be Pac-12 / SEC / Big Ten as death-star like athletic conferences that will continue to subsume the others, bit by bit.

Meet the soon-to-be “Big 4″ college athletic conferences

June 13th, 2010

The winners in the current college athletic conference shakeout?  The Pac-10, SEC, Big-10, and ACC, according to the number crunchers at fivethirtyeight.com.

Read their analysis here, but the bottom line is this seems to be on point.  Texas A&M does appear to be leaning towards the SEC, which should continue the domino effect outlined in their analysis.

As one of my colleagues pointed out over the weekend, in addition to being a huge money draw, these four athletic conferences would effectively bring college football one step closer to a playoff system (thus helping to cement their holds on the big-money bowl games).

ACC, Pac-16, Big Ten (aka Big 16), and SEC: here we come!

A glimpse into LeFuture!

May 22nd, 2010

Just in time for weekend reading: Basketball Prospectus updated their 2010 Free Agency report.

To top it all off, NYMag put out a great feature discussing the myriad other reasons why NY is the best fit for King James. Here’s a nice sample:

2009 Mavs – A Retrospective

May 5th, 2010

This is how the Mavs’ 2009 season ends: “Not with a bang, but a whimper.”  Specifically, an uninspired 97-87 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

Or better yet, as the Dallas Observer puts it, the Mavs “lift our hopes, only to break our hearts again.” » Read more: 2009 Mavs – A Retrospective

Bill Belichick as your new boss:

May 2nd, 2010

Wouldn’t it be great to have Bill Belichick as your new boss?  I certainly think so . . .

T-Pain in Dallas? You’ll find him . . . not at the club

April 23rd, 2010

I think it’s been at least two weeks since I posted content.  Thankfully Kyle has kept the flame alive, despite tax season having finished just a week ago.

Seeing as today was a “woman of the week” day, I thought it only fitting to share the Dallas Observer’s amusing synopsis of T-Pain’s most recent visit to Dallas.  (Note, you should stick around and read page two of the article: not laugh-out-loud funny, but at least “ha-ha” funny).

Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” – a throwback you say?

. . . well have you heard The News?  Yeah, that’s the power of love:

Texas Rangers get a speed boost

March 17th, 2010

I don’t know if this was news to everyone, but it sure was news to me.  Apparently Rangers’ manager Ron Washington tested positive for a banned substance in 2009, which sources and Washington himself suggest was cocaine (see here for full details)

That said, the Rangers look to continue to retain him as manager.

I can align behind supporting Washington, given he was contrite and apparently forthright about it.

But it’s tougher to understand why this story broke via SI.com, rather than via the Rangers themselves.  With Daniels’ emphasizing Washington’s transparency as a primary reason for supporting him, I think it’s safe to suggest Daniels should have exemplified this same virtue with the Rangers’ fan base.

Put me in Coach!

March 16th, 2010

You could smell the adrenaline in the air last night at the rackballer team’s softball game (despite the rackballers’ losing by some dismal score – full write-up by Kyle forthcoming).

This video is a tribute to Gene and Johnathan, who were 600 miles away and thus unable to play.

(Note: I could do without Keith Urban, but this is the best sounding video I found on youtube. Note also Fogerty’s Louisville Slugger guitar: awesome).

What to expect from the Mavs in the 2010 Free-Agent Bonanza

March 4th, 2010

The Summer of 2010 stands to be one of the most exciting and dynamic in recent NBA history.  There’s a  slew of talented free agents; several teams have talent + a TON of cap space; owners and players are talking smack and gearing up for a 2011-12 lockout; and if you’re a Mavs fan, you’ve got Cuban’s deal-making abilities waiting in the wings!

Beyond that high-level summary, what does the future hold for the Mavs?  And what does the detailed picture look like for other teams?
